Change Of Speed
I try to give as many tips as possible to help you improve your game. One skill I was able to master in my career was the art of changing speeds. It’s one of the easiest ways to fool your defender. Stop and go, Slow to quick, and hesitation are just a few ways to change speeds on your defender.
I see a lot of young players today going at one speed. In transition or fastbreak play they sometimes end up shooting a bad shot or get their layup blocked because they haven’t mastered this skill of changing speeds. The key is to evaluate your defender. You want to slow the defense down as much as possible causing them to relax, then counter with a quick move putting them in a recovery stage. Now you have a open shot or layup.
So be sure to add a few “Change Of Speed” drills to your practice routine so you can execute it in the game!
